ASSESSING PRODUCTIVITY OF WHEAT USING NUTRIENT EXPERT® WHEAT MODEL AND FARMERS FERTILIZER MANAGEMENT IN MORANG, NEPAL

Abstract


Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production is very much sensitive towards the proper nutrient dose and its application methods. Productivity trend line of wheat in Nepal has remained constant and has not risen from several years for which balanced fertilizer management keep great importance. Hence, to avoid these yield anomalies Nutrient Expert models have been applied as proper decision-making tools in the world. The field experiment on farmers’ field was conducted during November 2015 to April 2016 in Itahara and Babiyabirta VDCs of Morang district of Eastern Nepal. The experiment comprised of two treatments and twenty replications. The results showed that there is a significant difference between treatments nutrient expert (fertilizer dose recommended by nutrient expert software) and farmers’ field practice (fertilizer dose on farmers’ own practice) on wheat grain yield. The percent increase in the grain yield among the treatments was 95.33% in nutrient expert over the treatment farmers’ field practice. The significantly higher net return was recorded in treatment NE (NRs 47968) than the farmers’ fields practice (NRs 10784). Field experiment validation confirmed that the Nutrient Expert® Wheat model could be used as a practical tool for the decision support system to make more authentic fertilizer recommendation.
