Abstract

Bamboo and rattan are integral to the lives of more than a billion people worldwide. ‘The Poor Man’s timber’ follows the human life ‘from cradle to grave’. Despite this, very few people are aware of its huge potential to provide a sustainable way out of poverty and a stable source of income for small and medium-sized enterprises.

By examining the data available through bamboo resource estimation techniques by IRS 1C images and through GIS applications, we estimate quantitative as well as qualitative information on the dynamics of Bamboo industry in India and seeks to analyse India’s comparative and competitive advantage on the international market for high-value addition processed and manufactured bamboo. We have explored the bamboo resources and its applications to map the Technology, trade and competitiveness linkages in Bamboo industry of India. The researcher has applied System Dynamics and Total Interpretive Structural Modelling of the studied factors of Bamboo industry and mountain ecosystem to facilitate the application of several effective business models and formulate the strategic business development plan to strengthen and develop the bamboo industry in India.
