Characterization of Nepalese Naked Barley (Hordeum vulgare L. var. nudum) Germplasm Accession at Khumaltar, Lalitpur, Nepal

Abstract


The experiment entitled “Characterization of Nepalese Naked Barley (Hordeum vulgare L. var. nudum) Germplasm at Khumaltar, Lalitpur, Nepal”  was conducted at the research field of NAGRC, (gene bank) from November 2014 to April 2015 using RCBD design to characterize and to determine the phenotypic variability of 15 quantitative and 12 qualitative traits of 9 naked barley Germplasm. The characterization and determination of phenotypic variability was done by using descriptive statistics. The study revealed significant variation in both quantitative and qualitative traits. The quantitative traits were ranged as; days of emergence (8-14DAS), days of heading (92-120DAS), days of flowering (100-130DAS),  days of maturity (129-155DAS), Chlorophyll content of flag leaf (36.04-44.15SPAD), plant height (85.8-135.67cm), flag leaf length (9.78-13.6cm), flag leaf width (0.68-1.08cm), flag leaf sheath length (14.02-21.78cm), spike length (5.41-7.03cm), seed length (6.151-7.01mm), seed width (2.71-3.07mm), grain yield/spike (1.295-2.101gm), grain yield/hectare (1666.67-5141.67kg), and 1000-seeds weight (30.12-44.12gm). The SD was maximum in days of heading (9.228) and minimum in flag leaf width (0.103). The CV was maximum in flag leaf sheath length (13.13%) and minimum in seed width (0.98%). The grain yield per spike showed strong correlation with chlorophyll content of flag leaf (0.730**), flag leaf length (0.45*), flag leaf width (0.877**), flag leaf sheath length (0.47*), spike length (0.605**), seed length (0.936**), seed width (0.941**), and with thousand seed weight (0.89**). Similarly, grain yield per hectare showed positive correlation with days of emergence (0.418*), spike length (0.405*), seed length (0.411*), seed width (0.405*) and spike length (0.405*). This type of correlation will be beneficial to further breeding program. The days of emergence, heading, flowering and maturity also showed strong positive correlation with each other. Similarly, strong positive correlation between flag leaf length and flag leaf width and between the seed length and seed width were reported. 55.56% purple (basal only) stem pigmentation, 77.78% pale purple auricle pigmentation, 55.66% six rowed, long awns on lateral florets, 55.66% intermediate spike density, 55.66% awned lemma awn hood, 66.67% rough lemma awn barbs, 44.44% brown glume color, 88.89% lemma teeth, 55.66% long rachilla hair, 88.89% black/grey lemma color, and 55.66% black grain (pericarp) color were dominant over other categories of qualitative traits. These variations can be used for further breeding program for improvement of naked barley Germplasm. Germplasm NGRC 02306 and NGRC 02327 are suggested for cultivation and source material for breeding program and also for their molecular characterization.
